Spring Mill Hole #3

Hole #3

Hole #3 is a straightaway 585-yard par 5. A good drive will leave most players faced with a decision to either lay up short of the cross bunkers, and leave themselves with a mid-iron shot, or to hit it over the crossbunker and leave themselves with a short pitch to a small and elevated undulating green. The green slopes left to right and is protected on the left by bunkers and large trees, and by a deep bunker on the right.

Hole #18 – 1939 U.S. Open

The hole will furnish a lot of thrills for the galleries as well as the contestants. To be in perfect position a player must carry a trap or traps to the right center. This enables him to play a fine brassie or spoon over a wide, nasty trap similar to Hell’s Bunker on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. The player must be careful in playing for his position on his first two shots. If these are well-played, he has only a simple niblick to the finishing green which is well surrounded by traps and high grass.
